The Date to Remember to plan for sprinkler system blowout and winterization
If you have an automatic sprinkler system in the Denver area, add October 1, 2026 to your calendar. Because of worsening drought conditions, Denver Water has formally set an end to the 2026 lawn-watering season. Beginning October 1, watering grass and using spray (sprinkler) irrigation systems are prohibited under the new drought restrictions. You may still water trees, shrubs and perennials using a hand-held hose with a shutoff nozzle or with non-spray low-volume system like a drip hose. For homeowners with in-ground irrigation systems, that makes this a good time to schedule sprinkler blowout and winterization.
If you schedule your sprinkler blowout and winterization appointment by October 1, 2026 you’ll enjoy a 20% discount on the winterization service (not including additional repairs not specific to winterization). The service doesn’t have to be completed by 10/1/2026, just scheduled.

We will schedule appointments in first-signed-up, first-served order. October 1, 2026 is the date by which you have to turn off your system, not the date by which you have to blow it out and prepare it for winter, but the sooner you sign up, the sooner you can get onto the winterization schedule.

Why blowout and winterize a sprinkler system?
Colorado’s freezing temperatures can cause serious damage to irrigation sprinkler systems. Water left inside underground pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, backflow devices and other components can freeze and expand. According to Colorado State University Extension, freezing water can crack pipes and fittings and damage valves, sprinkler bodies and pumps.
Simply turning off the controller isn’t enough. To properly winterize sprinkler systems in Colorado you must remove water from the irrigation system before freezing conditions arrive.
Our professional winterization typically includes:
- Shutting off the irrigation water supply
- Properly addressing the backflow prevention device
- Using compressed air to blow out water from the sprinkler system’s irrigation zones
- Checking the system as it is blown out
- Preparing the system components for winter
- Leaving the irrigation system safely offline
CSU Extension specifically recommends blowing out irrigation systems with pressurized air rather than relying only on manual or automatic drain valves.
Why schedule your sprinkler blowout now?
Nobody knows exactly when the first hard freeze will arrive. What we do know is that the demand for irrigation winterization tends to increase as temperatures drop. If you wait until freezing weather is in the forecast there may be fewer appointment options that fit your schedule. Scheduling your sprinkler blowout and system winterization early means you have one less thing to worry about. Also it gives us an opportunity to identify problems that may need attention before the system is shut down for the winter.
Scheduling your appointment now does not mean you have to get your system blown out now – it just offers you more flexibility to make the appointment in the date/time slot that best suits your schedule. An irrigation system may be operated for installation, repair or reasonable maintenance, so long as the system is attended throughout the period of operation and water waste does not occur.

If your irrigation system develops cracks or other freeze damage following a winterization performed by Anything Irrigation, we will repair that damage in the spring at no cost to you, provided the system remains completely off-line from the time it is winterized until spring startup. So even if we get a spring-like day in January, enjoy the weather, but don’t turn on your system.
Keeping the system off-line is an important condition of the warranty, because turning it back on during the winter can allow water into components that have been previously prepared for freezing conditions, making them vulnerable to freeze damage.
What about watering your landscape in the winter?
Winterizing your sprinkler system does not mean you are abandoning your landscape. Quite the contrary, Denver Water permits homeowners to continue watering trees, shrubs and perennials with a hand-held hose equipped with an automatic shutoff nozzle or qualifying low-volume, non-spray irrigation like a soaker hose around a young tree. However grass watering and spray irrigation are prohibited beginning October 1 and you could incur fines for violations.
Some plants, especially young and newly planted ones may actually need supplemental water during a dry Colorado winter.
